Those who oppose you

I don't normally listen to the news other than a cursory look at the headlines. I just can't stomach the everyday bad news.

But I can't help but read about the recent news of the Middle East, reporting hundreds of thousands of Christians and other minorities groups driven from their homes and killed by Islam extremists.

Paul in Philippians 2:27-29 says
"Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in one spirit, contending as one man for the faith of the gospel without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you. This is a sign to them that they will be destroyed, but that you will be saved – and that by God. For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for him..." (emphasis added)

If I was a Christian Iraqi, I'd be frightened. I am being tortured and killed. I am being destroyed. What does Paul mean "do not be frightened in any way"? What does he mean by "they will be destroyed, but you will be saved"? It sure doesn't seem that way!

The 4 words "and that by God" make all the difference. Just as Jesus was seemingly destroyed on the cross, yet he lives, so those who are persecuted, driven to starve and killed, will also live. The enemy will be destroyed.

God's kingdom is always counterintuitive. What seems to be reality is not.  God is in control. He is the final judge, not man.

I pray that persecuted Christians everywhere, including ourselves, will stand firm, not be frightened, and have confidence that they are saved.
